This was going to be a Christmas book haul but y’all know it is when you get Christmas spending money and end up buying a bunch of books for yourself. Somehow my ‘new books’ list went from a reasonable size to a I-wouldn’t-be-able-to-pick-them-all-up-at-once kind of size. Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, I love books. Not only have I been gifted most of these and bought a few, but I’ve also done a dehaul over the Christmas period which I’ve swapped for a few (new to me) books, which I’m super excited to share with you!
Let’s get into the haul shall we?!
My main Christmas present from my parents this year was this super-duper adorable TBR cart, and here it is displaying my Christmas gifts! I essentially shoved my Amazon WL link in my family and friends faces and got quite a few books, so my “please take a look at this WL” pleas paid off!
From my boyfriend I got the Scythe box set, Dance of Thieves, Defy and Ninth House (which I already have one different edition of, but don’t tell him that!). He also got me a few Overwatch Pop! Vinyl figures which helped me get closer to completing my collection (only one more to purchase!!). I’ve already read a Scythe, but not the other two, and have been wanting the physical editions for a while so I’m super happy he picked these ones and he got lots of boyfriend points for spoiling me so much!
From my little brother I got Bloodwitch and Sightwitch by Susan Dennard and I almost cried when I saw them! He’d told me he’d picked a couple of my WL but I never expected him to get me two hardbacks (I know how expensive they are) and I promise you I thanked him greatly. I’ve finally got the full matching set of UK HB’s and I can’t wait to binge read the entire series sooooon.
From my best bookish friend, Aurora, I got Bone Crier’s Moon, The Stars We Steal and Every Other Weekend. Technically I opened these before a Christmas (with her permission) as I was having a bad day and she told me to open her present! I’m so blessed that she sends me unreleased ARCs that she gets sent because of her amazing journalism work with Frolic Media, and I honestly don’t deserve her in my life but I’m SO FREAKIN THANKFUL that she’s chosen me as a friend!
From some book twitter and Facebook exchanges I received 10 Blind Dates, The Kings Traitor and Crier’s War. I’ve sent them all a thank you message and even started 10 Blind Dates on Christmas day due to it being a holiday ‘feel good’ book. (It’s a 5 star read, by the way).
I also got Ash Princess and Lady Smoke (although they aren’t in this photo) as I also opened them a week or so before Christmas, due to receiving them in my Secret Santa parcel which we agreed to open on a certain date, which I now can’t remember. The 18th maybe? Either way, I’m super thankful to my Santa who chose this from my Wishlist as I’ve been wanting to give Ash Princess another read and don’t own a copy of it, as well as really wanting to move onto Lady Smoke. They are currently on my ‘immediate TBR’ but I also know I’ll procastnpinste until the third book comes out, but that doesn’t mean I’m not grateful to have received these ones now!
A few weeks after Christmas another book appeared in the mail, which was Every Heart A Doorway by Seanan McGuire. I’m already halfway through this one as my Current Read and absolutely adore the worldbuilding and the main characters and I really wish I was a wayward child so I could surround myself with this boarding school. I’ve actually also just ordered the next 3 in the series, completely finishing off my Christmas money but also almost completing a series, so I can’t complain.
Now for the rest of the books I bought myself!
I weirdly ended up with the first and third book in the Kingfountain series by Jeff Wheeler so I decided to order the second one to fill the gap (it was only £5 on Amazon and I have no restraint when it comes to purchasing books). It would have really bugged me to have a missing book in the series, even if I don’t have book 4-5 yet. I remember reading book 1 ages ago and LOVING it so that heavily influenced putting the next few on my WL as I really want to get round to completing the series eventually!
Keeping with the theme of completing series, I also ordered The Black Key by Amy Ewing to finalise my reread of the first two books and also purchased Capturing The Devil by Kerri Maniscalco, which is the last book in an amazing series about a girl who studies corpses and figures out how they died in a time period where girls are definitely not allowed to do that. The final book came out a few weeks ago and I’d had it on my Christmas list but ended up giving into my weakness and purchasing it myself. I HAVE NO REGRETS.
As I’ve mentioned, I also did a few trades – which are a great way of sourcing new books for just the price of postage cost.
From one trade I acquired Get A Life, Chloe Brown and The Guinevere Deception. These two are weirder ones on my WL as they are probably ones I’d never have purchased for myself but am actually interested in reading. I’m a little bit terrified of whether I’ll like Guinevere, purely because I’ve not enjoyed Kiersten’s writing style in the past, so I’d probably never have taken a risk by buying this one, even though it sounds right up my street. I figured I’d put it on my list and see if anyone else got it for me, and now that it’s on it’s way to arrive I really am super excited to read it. If still terrified.
Another two books I got was a UK Strange The Dreamer ARC and the UK Uprooted ARC from a trade with Sarah from https://thelittlecontemporarycorner.com. If you know anything about me, at all, you’ll know that I never stop recommending Strange, and to have this edition in my hands…? I cried. Like, a lot. Opening that box was a magical moment for me and I can’t explain enough how much it means to me that I have that copy for my collection. It is my precious and I will treasure it always, and treasure Sarah always for trading it with me! This sounds super sappy but it’s super true and I just… can’t believe my luck??
Another book I have coming in the mail from a trade is Blood Countess by Lana Popovic. This is a queer historical fantasy fiction and honestly? That’s all I need to know about it. It had me from queer. It doesn’t come out until the end of January and that’s a super exciting thought as I love getting to read books before they actually release. I feel like I have power over everyone else who wants to read it but hasn’t yet c;
I also want to give an honorary mention to The Nameless Queen by a Rebecca Laughlin, which arrived as a preorder a few days ago. I’ve already read it and LOVED IT. And by loved it, I mean I’m now completely obsessed and I’ve already tweeted this:
IT WAS AMAZING, SERIOUSLY. I’ll talk about it more in my next wrap up, but please go check it out and support a debut author who has more talent in her little finger than I do in my entire body!! Unbelievably amazing writing, world building AND CHARACTERISATION.
This concludes my ‘recent haul’! I hope you’ve enjoyed reading and please let me know in the comments if you also got any of the ones I did as I’d love to buddy read some of them over the next few months!
