I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but I’ve been weirdly silent these past few weeks, and that’s for one reason and one reason only: my life has been chaos.
Everything I’ve done has been gearing up for my FIRST EVER TRIP to the USA, as well as preparing for BookCon.
I wanted no surprises, so I rigorously Amy-Santiago’ed everything. (And by that, I mean I made a binder- for non Brooklyn 99 fans). I worked extra hours for extra spending money, shopped for everything I could possibly need – spent long afternoons preparing my schedule for BookCon and boyyyy was it all worth it. The build up and the wait and the tremendous excitement has led me to here, today, sat in a hotel in New York freaking City with an incredible pile of ARCs stacked up on my table nearby.
Although I’m hecka excited to share my book haul with you- I’ll be saving that until tomorrow, or maybe even the day after as I have a few more bookstores to visit. But let’s just say, over the 5 days of being here I’ve bought a lot as well as acquired a lot this weekend. You know that fuzzy warm feeling you get when you’ve planned something and everything goes satisfyingly well? Yep, my heart is buzzing excitedly and I’m incredibly proud of everything me and my boyfriend went through to make Book Con a success.
This is a once in a life time trip for me. It took a lot of saving, a lot of planning and 5 years of ‘I’m desperate to go to BookCon, next year will be my year’ until I was finally old enough, organised enough and in the financial position that it wouldn’t bankrupt me and mean I lived off bags of pasta and ketchup for the next few months.
I’ve been on pretty serious book buying ban since January, and mostly stuck to it. I had a few exceptions – my audible credit still came in monthly, I’ve still got my ongoing Illumicrate and Fairyloot subscriptions as well as a few preorders I’ve placed throughout the past 6 months. Mostly, my focus was not to impulse buy books at my local Waterstones and I DID AN AMAZING JOB OF IT. Which has all led up to this: 1 week in Manhattan, New York. Scores of different bookstores to visit (I WENT TO MY FIRST BARNES AND NOBELS!) and me: someone who has finally lifted her book buying ban and let herself enjoy what she worked so hard to achieve.
What’s especially crazy too is that my birthday is in a few weeks, so I’m going to keep my book buying ban lifted until then – and after I’ll probably hop back onto it with my HUMONGOUS TBR and try and work my way through some of my most anticipated releases EVER that I managed to get my hands on whilst I was over here!! (I know, I’m such a tease – but I swear you’ll find out what they were sooooon!)
I’ll just say this for now: I cannot believe my luck.
