If you’ve been on the internet at all in the last few years – you’ll have seen this Tag blow up bigger than a hot air balloon.
People apparently like to share their music tastes, connect them to books and then dance beautifully on BookTube.
I figured I wanted to join in the fun. Only I’m not on BookTube. And I can’t actually dance.
SO I’M DOING THE BOOK TAG: WITH A TWIST.
I’ll be putting my playlist on shuffle, associating a book with the song – and then explaining my choices.
Not only do you get to find out what musicals I’m totally obsessed with, but hopefully I’ll be mentioning books I would have never thought to bring up otherwise. (SORRY PRECIOUS BABIES, I LOVE YOU REALLY).
HERE GOES NOTHING.
SONG 1: You Keep Me Hanging On (Glee version, because I have no shame).
A sample of the lyrics (so you get a feel for the song):
Set me free why don’t you baby,
Get out my life why don’t you baby,
Because you don’t really love me:
You just keep me hanging on.
I HAVE TO ADMIT I’M GETTING SERIOUS MAVEN & MARE VIBES FROM THE RED QUEEN SERIES BY VICTORIA AVEYARD.
For anyone who doesn’t know entirely who those characters are, or have a clue about the books – these two are constantly pushing and pulling at each other. It’s a constant, “I’m not good enough,” “You’re perfect” & “I can’t be who you need me to be” bookish trope that shows up in Young Adult more often than I’d like to admit.
Okay, so the trope kind of makes sense. I’m always worried that I’m not good enough for my boyfriend – but I get over it because I need to. And because he loves me.
(OTP RIGHT HERE).
SONG 2: THE ADAMS ADMINISTRATION (Hamilton)
“How does Hamilton, creator of-
Destroy his reputation-”
I could type out the whole song if needs be, but I’ve chosen some specific lyrics that I think match my book choice the most.
And I’m breaking the rules, because rather than specifically choosing a book I’m choosing a character.
OKAY, HEAR ME OUT.
So Dumbledore had our hearts throughout the whole series, until he admitted he was using Harry as a ploy in all of his plotting and devious schemes.
Basically, in other words: he f*cked up.
He was in power, ruling the world – and then he betrayed the ones he should have loved.
HAMILTON VIBES OR WHAT?
SONG 3: Stay Alive (Hamilton, again. I don’t even regret it.)
I’m sorry, is this not your speed?
What are you doing, get back on your feet!
This is probably the hardest one I’ve had to answer so far. For the other two, responses came immediately.
But if I really had to choose – and I guess I’m making pretty tenuous links here, I’d choose Shatter Me.
I’ll set the scenes (without spoilers):
It’s a YA dystopian, so obviously we have some sort of rebellion going on.
We have a love interest.
We have a side that keeps on losing.
THAT’S ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW.
Song 4: Finale (Wicked)
No one mourns the wicked,
Now at last she’s dead and gone-
Now at last there’s joy throughout the land.
I’m completely tempted to actually say the Wizard of Oz, but I feel like that would be cheating. Considerably.
I’m trying really hard to think of evil Queen’s who have passed away in YA books, but all I can think of are Evil King’s.
Maybe if Cersei ever dies, I can say the A Song of Ice and Fire (Game of Thrones) books. But she’s far too sneaky and clever to ever let herself die.
SOMETHING JUST HIT ME.
IT’S COMING TO ME.
CINDER BY MARISSA MEYER.
I can’t say anything without spoilers, but if you’ve read it you’ll know who I mean.
You’ll just know.
SONG 5: Born to Boogie (Billy Elliot)
You have to release your inner caveman, and everything will just flow naturally!
We weren’t born to stand still,
It’s a question of will.
We were born to react,
It’s a fact!
These lyrics might not be entirely accurate. I’m too busy dancing to the song to type them out correctly.
The book I pick = Tiny Pretty Things.
I have no idea what this book is actually about because I’m cheating and I haven’t read it yet, but I know the main character is a ballerina.
AND WHO DOESN’T LOVE BALLERINA BOOKS?
SONG 6: Just The Way You Are (Pitch Perfect mashup version. BEAUTIFUL.)
Oh her eyes, her eyes make the stars look like they’re not shining
Her hair, her hair falls perfectly without her trying:
She’s so beautiful. And I tell her every day.
THE FIRST THING THAT COMES IMMEDIATELY TO ME IS THE TROPE WHERE YA CHARACTERS ARE DESCRIBED AS “PLAIN” AND “ORDINARY” AND THEN SUDDENLY ARE THE MOST BEAUTIFUL MAIDENS OF ALL THE LAND.
But that’s a rant for a different time.
A completely different time.
Because I’m totally not going to let myself get sidetracked (this time), I’m going to stick what I’m actually meant to be doing and actually choose a book:
The Selection by Kiera Cass.
The two main characters in it are coUPLE GOALS.
(Apart from me & my aforementioned boyfriend of course. Because please.)
Song 6: Helpless (Hamilton)
Okay so I’m really struggling with all the romantic songs I’m suddenly getting. Most YA couples are actually formed from really unhealthy situations.
Yes, of course I like hate-to-love tropes as much as the next girl, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s healthy.
Not in any sense of the word.
but I SUPPOOOOOOSE.
If I have to choose a female completely woooooo’ed by her significant other, I can choose the LUX series books.
That’s all you need to know, honestly.
SONG 7: Where You Are (Moana. Finally some Disney up in here!)
Here we’ll stay,
Safe and well provided-
And when we look to the future,
There you are.
OKAY OKAY SO MY INSTANT REACTION IS TO GO WITH ONCE OF MY MOST RECENT READS, AMERICAN PANDA.
But then technically her parents dooo support her moving out, because they’re so proud of her for getting into an Ivy League college.
SO I’M GOING TO HAVE TO CHANGE MY ANSWER TO ‘STARFISH’ BY AKEMI DAWN BOWMAN.
Also one of my most recent reads – but this one completely captured my heart.
The main character’s abusive mother constantly tries to keep her child with her, and although I know Moana’s parents are nothing like that – I think it suits the song lyrics.
SONG 8: One Jump Ahead (Aladdin: The Musical)
Gotta keep one jump ahead of the red line,
Gotta keep one swing ahead of the sword,
I steal – only what I can’t afford.
And that’s everything.
INSTANTLY: THE HUNGER GAMES.
There whole lives revolve around illegally hunting and stealing food.
And trying to stay out of trouble.
Which, obviously doesn’t go very well – otherwise we wouldn’t have a book really, would we?
I also want to make an honourable mention to the Six of Crows cast who were my next instinct to say for this song, because they’re a bunch of crooked, loveable thieves.
Exactly what you need in your life.
SONG 9: Proud of Your Boy (Aladdin: The Musical. AGAIN).
I’m going to become somebody, mum,
I don’t know how exactly:
But I am.
PERCY JACKSON VIBES. SOBS.
All he wants in the beginning is to be able to save his mum from her bad job and her bad boyfriend and protect her.
MY POOR HEART.
SONG 10: The World Was Wide Enough (Hamilton. Apparently out of the 10+ musicals I have on my playlist, I manage to get 3/10 of these songs to be Hamilton. HUH.)
One two three four five six seven eight nine,
There are 10 things you need to know.
I watched Hamilton examine the terrain,
I wish I knew what was happening in his brain.
This man is poisoned by political pursuits.
SO MUCH OF THIS SONG IS IMPORTANT. I HONESTLY WISH I COULD ATTEMPT TO TYPE OUT ALL THE LYRICS, BUT IT’S A LONG SONG.
INSTEAD OF ME DOING THAT, JUST GO LISTEN TO IT.
RIGHT NOW. IN THE MIDDLE OF MY POST.
THE MAIN LYRIC LINE THAT I’M DRAWING FROM FOR MY BOOK CHOICE THOUGH IS THIS:
“This man will not make an orphan of my daughter.
They won’t teach you this in your classes,
But why would Hamilton wear his glasses-
If not to take deadly aim?”
I literally can not handle the feels of this song.
And a book I can not handle the feels of?
HARRY POTTER AGAIN.
I WON’T EVEN APOLOGISE.
BUT GUYS: REMUS.
Teddy became an orphan.
(Okay I’m going to go hide before you all tear down my door).
