So this tag has been making its rounds on the blogsphere, the booktubeverse (I’m making up words now) and quite possibly every possible social media platform there is.
AND I’M HOPPING ABOARD THE TRAIN. NO SHAME.
Here is the original video to the first person who made up this tag!
I could go on for decades about how excited I am to finally answer these questions, OR I could just answer them! I’ll go for the nicer option.
Question 1) What is a popular book or series that you didn’t like.
I know some people really struggle with this answer, but there isn’t a moments hesitation in my mind when I say: The Maze Runner.
Not only is the writing-style not my cup of tea (meaning its bland and unsweetened), but the storyline had SO MUCH POTENTIAL that was completely untapped.
And I suppose I have a personal vendatta against James Dashner.
Before completely crossing off books though, I always try to give them a few goes – and the saddest thing is, when I first bought The Maze Runner – I bought the whole collection as a boxset.
I read The Maze Runner three times, attempting to move on to the second book each time before I finally gave up.
Just nope. Nope.
The Raven Cycle series seems to be my worst nightmare.
I have tried to get into the first book (The Raven Boys) at least four or five times.
I WANT SO BADLY TO LOVE AND IT AND JOIN IN ON THE HYPE.
I guess it’s not for me though!
Question 2) What is a popular book or series that everyone else seems to hate but you love?
Okay, I’m in-league with some hardcore fans: but nowhere near as many as there should be.
Or used to be.
Before everyone suddenly changed their minds when it was ‘cool’ to hate Twilight.
Question 3) Pick your least favourite OTP.
PEETA AND KATNISS.
Katniss, babe, you could have had Gale.
Question 4) A popular genre that just isn’t your fancy.
I’ve tried so so hard to get into it, but they always fall flat for me.
They have to have at least a dash of a fantasy element to keep me engaged, and even then I find myself procrastinating reading rather than actually doing it.
Like right now, the book in my bag is a new historical fiction – Blood and Sand that I got in my Illumicrate box but nopenopenope. It’s exactly my cup of tea and just… Not doing it for me.
THE COVER IS GORGEOUS THOUGH.
Question 5) Who is one main character that just reaaallly gets on your nerves?
*Coughs and begins to look around awkwardly*
I DON’T EVEN HAVE A VALID REASON. (Apart from loving Gale Hawthorne).
Seriously though, he’s a nice guy with inner strength.
This would usually be sop-worthy.
BUT I JUST CAN’T MAKE MYSELF LIKE HIM.
Question 6) Who is one popular author that you have no interest in?
This easily has to be the most difficult question, considering I try not to write-off authors before at least giving them a try, so I’ll choose someone who I have given a go, and just not enjoyed their writing style.
So, heartbreakingly, at this moment my answer would be:
I really really wanted to love Zenith, but I ended up DNF’ing her book. I don’t DNF often. At all, if I can help it.
Everything was just so trope-y (is that a word?) and I really couldn’t bring myself to keep turning the pages.
WRITING THIS, ANOTHER AUTHOR JUST HIT ME.
The synopsis to The Bone Season just doesn’t interest me at all.
As a book lover, I do own it though.
Just in case inspiration hits me.
Question 7) What is a popular book trope you are tired of seeing?
OH BOY, I HAVE SO MANY.
GRAB SOME POPCORN BECAUSE I’M ABOUT TO SPURT OUT WORDS ONTO A PAGE TO GET ACROSS MY TRUE EMOTIONS.
I’LL START OFF BY LISTING JUST A “FEW”:
(Do I even need to say anything about this one? Do I really?)
You know that moment where an overcompensated-apprentice overtakes their master? The one who has trained for decades, since their birth to become the best?
AND THEN SUDDENLY SOMEONE WHO’S BEEN TRAINED BY THEM FOR TWO DAYS IS MORE POWERFUL THAN THEY ARE?!
I’ve been drafting my own novel lately, and my main character (who has just discovered they were born into the wrong House) discovers he has wind abilities.
And he keeps falling out of the sky.
I’ve probably dropped him at least three or four times now.
He’s broken his wrist at least once.
And his ribs.
THAT’S BECAUSE TALENT DOES NOT JUST COME EASILY.
Question 8) A popular book or series that you have no interest in reading.
I really want to say Fifty Shades of Grey, but I’m guiltily intrigued by it.
I just have to know how bad it is.
I have to.
Question 9) What movie adaption did you prefer over the book?
Will everyone absolutely hate me if I say Eragon?
I know, I know- it even has a reputation of being possibly THE WORST book-to-movie adaption there is.
HOWEVER, IN MY DEFENSE: I accidentally watched the movie before reading the book. And, without any knowledge of the book – it was beautiful. The storyline was gorgeous, the action bursting and the dragon animation is probably my favourite of all time. (Let’s be honest, TV hasn’t always gotten animation of flying things right. But Saphira in the Eragon movie? 10/10).
Back then I hadn’t even known there was a book. This was possibly back before I was a hard-core reader.
I guess it’ll always have a special part in my heart.
