If you need your heart ripped brutally out of your chest, THIS IS EXACTLY THE BOOK FOR YOU.

(Sometimes pain can be fun, right? Right?)

I received an ARC of this book from Pan Macmillan UK in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own, and I am forever grateful to publishers for all the hard work they do.

I’m writing this after sitting in a stunned-shock for at least half an hour after finishing Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi.

I probably need more than half an hour to collect my thoughts and attempt not to pour my heartbreak onto the page, but this is the time where I feel I will be the most honest, and my honesty amounts to this:

My heart will never be the same again.

I’m the kind of bookish-girl who has a constant crush on the heart-wrenchingly handsome antagonist with a rough back story and a heart of molten liquid: and this book has given me the hunk of a book boyfriend I love. (Sorry Warner, but you’ll have to fight hard to keep your place in my heart!)

It is so much more.

It is everything.

Based on Nigerian mythology, Children of Blood and Bone incorporates education with fantasy – colliding the two worlds into a stunning piece of art that needs to be displayed… Everywhere.

Told from a dual perspective, we get to see into the hearts and minds of four main characters, and for once? Their perspectives are done perfectly. I’m so sick of entering multi-perspectives minds who have the same voice and emotions chapter after chapter. BUT TOMI ADEYEMI HAS NAILED IT RIGHT ON THE HEAD. Every character is so beautifully diverse and so uniquely crafted that my heart is yearning for more and more of my precious babies for years to come.

Good thing a little birdy told me a second book is being written, otherwise my heart would NOT be able to cope.

The plot of this book is engaging and lively, perfectly balancing out action with swoony heart-stopping moments and I just couldn’t have enjoyed it more. Seriously. And I absolutely love it when the hype matches my expectations as now I can sit back and glide on the buzz of this emotion-wrecking novel.

(But please give me the sequel ASAP).

Essentially, the synopsis is this:

Once, magic and maji ruled the land – creating an empire out of fire and blood.

But magic was ripped away from the hands of the creators.

And then the world set alight.

Tomi Adeyemi has defied my already sky-high expectations and comp, pletely blown me away with her masterpiece of a debut. The magic concepts are well-developed and new and exciting and completely unlike the stereotypical YA mages.

Fresh, exciting and bloodthirsty – my heart has been stolen.

I could not be happier.

  1. Thank you for this review! I’ve seen it talked about everywhere and wasn’t sure it was my kind of book and was a little worried the hype would make it feel like a let down. After reading this though I think it’s definitely worth a go and will add it to my TBR!

  2. I can’t wait to read this book!!! I have it right here but I’m making myself finish other books first for our book club challenge this month. But it’s so hard, waiting for April 1st! And you made it even harder right now with this awesome review!
